We promise you, if you take your daughter to check out an age-appropriate skincare counter or product line (many young girls like Clinique, Aveeno, Nivea, or Proactive lines of cleansers, moisturizers, and face masks), your daughter may well think you have hung the moon and the stars. You shouldn’t head to the expensive end of the skincare lines for this one. Look for lines that have sunblock in their moisturizers. Look for words like gentle. Girls with acne often want to go in like a team of Navy Seals and bomb the heck out of their faces, picking acne till it’s begging for mercy. Unfortunately, picking and then overusing drying solutions will only aggravate the problem and lead to scarring. Early skincare practices can both moderate breakouts and habituate good care for the long term.

If she tells you that her acne is getting worse or is not responding to her cleansing and care routine, ask if she’d like to talk to the pediatrician. The emotional toll acne takes on a developing teen is high. It can lead to low self-esteem, social isolation, and some nasty wisecracks from peers and siblings. The sooner she has a way to mitigate the breakouts and treat them in healthy ways when they do come, the less damage will happen to both her skin and her self-esteem.
